Frostburg State University Theatre's Season Too! series will present A.R. Gurney's contemporary comedy "Sylvia" on Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1, at 8 p.m. in the FSU Performing Arts Center F. Perry Smith Studio Theatre.
Directed by FSU student Gina Powell, "Sylvia" humorously tells the story of Greg (Jeff Robbins) and Kate (Katie Norris) who move to Manhattan after 22 years of raising children in the suburbs. While Greg's career as a financial trader winds down, Kate's career as a public school English teacher begins to offer more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog that he found (or who found him) in the park bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her nametag. A street-smart mixture of lab and poodle, Sylvia (Coty Warn) becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. Sylvia offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of this job and the unknown complexities of middle age, whereas to Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. The couple's marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.
