Frostburg State University to Hold Friday Symposium as Part of Appalachian Festival
09/14/2011

Frostburg State University’s Appalachian Festival will include an informative symposium titled “Building Sustainable Communities through Community Engagement and Activism” on the campus’ Upper Quad on Friday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. The event will focus on the conflicts created by surface mining and natural gas drilling and will feature speakers from the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation and CitizenShale, as well as a musical performance by Jay Smar.

The speakers will focus on the regional residents who are coming together to ensure that their communities emphasize long-term cultural and environmental sustainability over short-term profit.

Following the symposium, the film “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia,” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in Frostburg’s Palace Theatre on Main Street. The legendary family seen in the film is known for its wild, excessive criminal ways, as well as its mountain-dancing member, Jesco White, star of the documentary “Dancing Outlaw.” The film shows the comic and tragic sides of life on the other side of the law, and deals with corruption, poverty and West Virginia’s devastating coal-mining culture that, in turn, shaped the White family. After the film, Jacob Young, the director of “Dancing Outlaw,” will engage the audience in a discussion.
