Aspiring poets and poetry fans have the chance to experience the excitement of the Frostburg State Poetry Bash, scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18, at Frostburg State University.
The "Poetry Bash Itinerary" involves three related events: the Frostburg State Regional Poetry Slam™, the Poets Café and a poetry workshop. National Poetry Slam Champion Reggie Gibson will lead all activities, which are designed to offer aspiring poets from various campuses a creative weekend in the scenic mountain setting of FSU. The Poetry Slam itself is restricted to college students, but the public may attend the Café and the workshop.
Students interested in participating in the Poetry Slam, to be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall, must sign up by 12:45 p.m. Only the first 30 poets will be accepted. The grand prize is $500.
That evening, at 9 p.m. in the Lane Center Loft, Reggie Gibson will host the Poets Café - Open Mic Night. Those attending are encouraged to bring their poetry.
On Sunday from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Gibson will facilitate the poetry workshop in Lane Center room 201. In this interactive workshop, he will review various poetry styles and techniques. There is a $7 charge to cover the cost of lunch, to be catered by Sodexho-Marriott.
Gibson, who returns to Frostburg for the Poetry Bash, has shared the stage with such talents as the Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez and Roy Ayers. His poem "Brother to the Night" was featured in the movie love jones. In 99, he published his first manuscript, Storms Beneath the Skin, and will soon release another book. Gibson has shared his talents at schools, universities and various venues in six countries. His "word-speak" has been called "rhythmistical" for its interweaving of the African mystical griot tradition with often hard-edged African-American rhythms.
