A lifeguard certification class is being offered through Frostburg State University’s Activities for Life from Feb. 23 through March 2.
Lifeguard students are required to have strong swimming skills and should be able to complete a series of prerequisites on the first day of class, including a 300-yard continuous swim; 10 minutes of treading; 10- to 25-yard sprints; and the following activities in sequence – a 20-yard swim, a feet-first surface dive, a brick retrieval from 12 feet, a swim back to side and an exit from the water.
The class will be held at the following times and locations: Thursday, Feb. 23, 5 to 8 p.m., Cordts PE Room 110-1; Friday, Feb. 24, 5 to 10 p.m., FSU Pool; Saturday, Feb. 25, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., PE Room 110-1; Sunday, Feb. 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., FSU Pool; Tuesday, Feb. 28, 6 to 10 p.m., FSU Pool; Thursday, March 1, 6 to 10 p.m., FSU Pool; and Friday, March 2, 6 to 9 p.m., FSU Pool.
Participants must attend all given classroom and pool times, and must be 15 years old before the conclusion of the class.
The instructor for the course is Dr. Troy Strieby.
The payment deadline is Feb. 20. Checks must be made payable to FSU. A lifeguard book is available free of charge online, or in print for an additional fee.
