Frostburg State University’s College of Business Sending Students to Peru to Experience International Leadership, Service

The College of Business at Frostburg State University is sending a group of students to Peru July 24 through Aug. 3, as part of its ongoing commitment to providing global education that prepares future business leaders for today’s world.

The trip, led by Dr. Jeffrey McClellan, assistant professor in FSU’s Department of Management, and Dr. Carol Gaumer, chair of FSU’s Department of Marketing and Finance, includes participating in an international leadership conference; doing a service project in an Andean village; exploring Peru’s capital of Lima; traveling to Cuzco, one of the country’s most celebrated cities; and visiting Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world. It has been organized in conjunction with Reach Out and Learn, a nonprofit organization dedicated to international service learning and cross-cultural community building and dialogue.

“Sending our students to Peru so they can study international leadership is one of many ways Frostburg State University’s College of Business is globalizing our curriculum and ensuring our students are ready for jobs and other professional development opportunities,” said Dr. Ahmad Tootoonchi, dean of the College of Business. “We also have programs we’re developing and offering in other countries, including China and India.

”We feel this not only upholds our goals as a college internationally accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, but it also responds to how fast our world is changing,” Tootoonchi continued. “Never has it been more important for students to understand the value of cultural sensitivity, leadership and service with the many different people they will meet and work with in business and in their everyday lives.”

Participants traveling to Peru are enrolled in a management course called “Leadership in Latin America” and have been discussing and studying leadership since the online component of the course began July 1. As part of the class, they will be sharing their ideas and experiences on a Tumblr blog, frostburgcobperu.tumblr.com. The blog’s theme, “Hoy por ti, mañana por mi," which translates into “Today for you, tomorrow for me,” reflects Frostburg Team Peru 2013’s goals of sharing knowledge and doing a service project with the Peruvian people, while also learning from them and using those ideas to inspire how they look at the world in the future.

In addition to their Tumblr blog, Frostburg Team Peru 2013 will be sharing their journey on their Facebook Page, facebook.com/fsucobperu, and sharing pictures and other content with the hashtag #fsucobperu through their Instagram account, frostburgcobperu, and on Twitter.
