Associate Professor Nicole Mattis, chair of the Frostburg State University Department of Theatre and Dance, has been honored as a 2012 Leading Woman by The Daily Record. This award recognizes women under the age of 40 who display professional achievement, commitment to community service and are leaders who are inspiring change.

Mattis is one of only 50 women chosen for this award in Maryland. These professionals will be celebrated Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Hyatt Regency in Baltimore.

At FSU, Mattis teaches classes in acting, voice and movement, and directs for the Theatre and Dance production season. She is a long-time member of the Women’s Studies Steering Committee, for which she initiated V-Day in 2002. A global movement to end violence against women and girls, V-Day’s yearly production of “The Vagina Monologues” donates proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales to local nonprofit organizations such as the Family Crisis Resource Center and the Dove Center. Mattis advised V-Day activities at FSU from 2002 to 2009, and she continues to advise production of “The Vagina Monologues.” She has also served on the committees of African-American Studies and the National Coalition Building Institute, among others.

In the community, Mattis is the current chair of Family Crisis Resource Center’s Board of Directors, for which she works on the annual Dancing With the Local Stars fundraising committee. Mattis also served on the board for the Allegany Arts Council.

Mattis holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and English from Northern Michigan University, as well as a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a member of the Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association and the Actors’ Equity Association, and she is a Certified Associate Teacher of Firzmaurice Voicework. Locally, she is a member of the Allegany Arts Council.
