FrostburgFirst Nets Award from Maryland Main Street Program with Help from FSU Students
Thanks to the efforts of two Frostburg State University students, FrostburgFirst, a community-driven program that fosters economic development and cultural growth in the City of Frostburg, was recently recognized with an award from the Maryland Main Street Program for its work with its Clean, Safe & Green Committee. FrostburgFirst submitted a report for review to obtain the award that included a plan for the C, S & G Committee developed by FSU students Markida Mackall, Bowie, Md., and Jessica Butler, Laurel, Md. Mackall and Butler helped draft the plan as a practicum project for their leadership studies curriculum at FSU.
“I think the work Markida and Jessica did in their practicum project is reflective of the experience our students immerse themselves in throughout the process of getting their leadership studies minor,” said Bill Mandicott, an instructor and organizer of the leadership studies minor program at FSU. “They really practice leadership skills and planning in their engagement with the community through efforts like this.”
Mackall graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in leadership studies in May 2008. Butler is a junior majoring in recreation and parks management; she is also pursuing a minor in leadership studies at FSU.
The Maryland Main Street Program cited the C, S and G’s success with developing and implementing strategies for increased community safety, improved streetscapes and improved community parks and playgrounds that support a positive image of the commercial and residential areas of the Main Street district in Frostburg.
