FSU Announces Dr. Ken Witmer as Interim Dean of Education

Dr. Ken Witmer, LaVale, has been named the interim dean of the Frostburg State University College of Education, replacing Dr. Susan Arisman, who retired in March.

“Ken has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Educational Professions since 1986 and has served in the role of associate dean on a full-time basis since 2004,” said Dr. Stephen Simpson, FSU provost, noting Witmer’s “extraordinary contributions to FSU.” in March.

Witmer began his education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania before receiving his Masters in Educational Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. He continued his academic studies with the University of Maryland receiving his Ph.D. in Education Policy, Planning and Administration in 1983. in March.

After serving at the University of Maryland College Park as an adjunct lecturer, Witmer made the move to FSU as a lecturer in the Education Professions Department. He has made many contributions to the University as both faculty member and chair of the Faculty Development Subcommittee, a member of the Unit Technology Committee and of the President’s Cabinet. Witmer also served as a Faculty Senator from 1994-1997 and 1999-2002. Most recently he was appointed the chair of the Education Committee of the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. in March.

In addition to 20 years of service, Witmer has also been award several honors including the University System of Maryland Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and the FSU Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching.
