FSU Celebrates Women in Sports
09/21/2010

Frostburg State University will showcase women’s sports achievement with “Celebrating Women in Sports” on Monday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Compton Science Center, room 224.

The panel will feature Nina Kuscsik, a former long distance runner and activist who prepared and introduced the proposal for including women in the Olympic marathon. Other participants include Pamela Boteler, first American woman to compete in sprint canoeing against men and president of WomenCAN; Jody Pepple, senior women’s administrator and women’s basketball coach at FSU; and Dr. Mihaela Wood, an FSU history faculty member who specializes in sports history.

Jessica O’Neil, an FSU student and member of the FSU Cross Country and Track teams, initiated, coordinated and organized this panel discussion as a way to showcase women’s sports achievements worldwide, as well as to highlight future actions needed for promoting gender equality in sports. The idea to hold an event on campus grew from an independent study research paper on women’s inclusion in the Olympic marathon.

The panel discussion will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Following the event, audience members will have the opportunity for one-on-one interactions with the participants. This presentation is free and open to the public.

The event is sponsored by the FSU Student Government Association, the Queen City Striders, FSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the FSU Women’s Studies Program.
