FSU, City of Frostburg Will Present Daylong Activities with “Storybook Holiday”
The Elf Olympics will kick off a day of holiday storybook-themed events in downtown Frostburg on Dec. 6, as the FSU Children’s Literature Centre and Frostburg First again host Frostburg’s Storybook Holiday.
The city of Frostburg will again be transformed into a holiday winter wonderland, as the Frostburg State University Children’s Literature Center and Frostburg First come together to present the fifth annual “Frostburg’s Storybook Holiday,” a daylong event of seasonal activities on Saturday, Dec. 6, running from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The opening celebration will occur at Failinger’s Historic Hotel Gunter on Main Street, where guests can enjoy “Breakfast with the Elves” for $5 at 8:30 a.m. or 9:15 a.m. The second annual Elf Olympics will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a performance from the Frostburg Dance Academy. The Frostburg Masonic Lodge will sponsor the Storybook Holiday Parade that will roll down Main Street at 10 a.m., ending with a 1K Jingle Run.

Restaurants will feature special holiday offerings, and showcase windows will display decorations created by local school children who were inspired by children’s holiday stories.

The sidewalks of Frostburg will feature carolers and wandering elves, and Frostburg’s City Place, located on Water Street, will host a variety of activities throughout the day, including free carriage rides from noon until 4 p.m. From 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. children may visit the “Elves Secret Workshop,” and for $1 choose a craft to make and wrap as a “secret” gift. They may also visit the “Letter to Santa” station, where they can write and mail their letter to the North Pole. Children will also have the opportunity to have their picture taken with an elf for $2. During the same time, vendors will be selling a variety of crafts and artwork, and lumps of coal will be available for $1 as a gift for that “special someone.” Also, Daniel Kirk, author of “Library Mouse,” “Snow Dude” and “Snow Families” will be at the Frostburg Community Library at noon to give a presentation. In addition to the presentation, visitors can come to City Place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to purchase one of Kirk’s books and have it autographed.

Take the time for holiday storybook readings at 1 p.m. at Main Street Books, Hotel Gunter, The Bobcat Store or Frostburg Community Library. Drawings for a free book will be held at all locations. Also, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the Soroptomist Holiday Auction will take place at the Community Center. Once again, the Hotel Gunter will house the annual “Mountain City Cookies Contest,” starting at 1 p.m.

The celebration will conclude with the lighting of the city Christmas tree at 6:30 p.m. Cookies, cocoa and a visit from Saint Nick will be part of the holiday program presented at City Place at 6:30 p.m. as well. The Palace Theatre will host an 8 p.m. showing of the 1983 holiday classic, “A Christmas Story.” Tickets are $5 and are on sale at Main Street Books and the Children’s Literature Centre at FSU.
