FSU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Honors Second Circle of Alumni

The Frostburg State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will hold its second recognition of alumni with the Alumni Circle of Excellence award on Thursday, May 1.

This year’s winners include Mary Clapsaddle ’83, a geography and sociology graduate who is now a legislative manager for the Maryland Department of Legislative Services; Daniel P. Hunt, M.D. ’77, a mathematics graduate who is now an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard University; Shirley Giarritta ’70, a graduate of the art education program and now an art teacher at Allegany College of Maryland, and Richard Whelan ’79, a political science graduate who has become the president of Marketing General, Inc.

Clapsaddle earned her Master of Regional Planning degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and began her career as assistant to the County Manager of Chatham, North Carolina. She later served as a research associate for the National Association of Counties in Washington, D.C. Her career in Maryland began with the Department of Legislative Services in the General Assembly, then as director of Policy Development with the Department of Business and Economic Development and in 2002, she was appointed the assistant state superintendent for Business Services with the Department of Education.

Hunt received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and his postdoctoral training was in the area of internal medicine. Hunt is a clinician and an educator and began his career in Houston, Texas, where he practiced medicine at the Texas Medicine Center for 11 years while serving as a faculty member at the Baylor College of Medicine, where eventually he became an associate professor. In 2005, Hunt joined the faculty of Harvard University as associate professor of Medicine and is also director of Inpatient Clinician Educator Services in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Giarritta earned her Master of Arts degree in painting and sculpture from James Madison University and began her career teaching art and supervising the arts program for Frederick County Public Schools in Winchester, Va. From 1972 to 1977, she co-owned The Art Shop in Winchester, Va. and Cumberland, Md. Currently, Giarritta owns and manages Connoisseur Interiors and Gallery in Cumberland. She is a founding member of the Cumberland Theatre Board of Trustees and appointed to serve on the Maryland States Arts Council for three terms and has served as president.

Whelan oversees a company of 60 marketing specialists in Alexandria, Va., who have strategized marketing and creative needs for 45 organizations in 11 states and Washington, D.C. He is also a frequent speaker and author on association membership and marketing topics.

An open panel discussion with all four award winners will be held Thursday, May 1, at 4 p.m. in room 226 of the Compton Science Center, which is free and open to the public. The alumni will also visit classrooms and have meetings and a breakfast with students from the department of which they received their degrees.
