Frostburg State University’s Division of Performing Arts-Music will present a Faculty/Guest Artist Series concert featuring the talents of Kristin Bacchiocchi-Stewart on flute and Michael Zell on marimba at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 16 Washington St. in Cumberland.
The performance is free and open to the public and will include a diverse and lively selection of contemporary works such as "Hot Water Burn Baby" by Roshanne Etezady; "Duettino Concertante" by Ingolf Dahl; "Lookout for flute solo" by Robert Dick; "Kembang Suling: ‘Three Snapshots of Asia’" (1. Bali, 2. Japan, 3. India) by Gareth Farr; "Rebons for solo percussion" by Iannis Xenakis; "Toward the Sea" (1. The Night, 2. Moby Dick, 3. Cape Cod) by Toru Takemitsu; and "Histoire du Tango" (1. Bordell 1900, 2. Café 1930, 3. Nightclub 1960, 4. Concert d'aujourd'hui) by Astor Piazzolla.
An active performer of contemporary music, Bacchiocchi-Stewart is also a dedicated chamber musician. She has been a member of TRITONIS (flute, cello, and guitar) since 2001, when they premiered "Concerto Grosso" by Robert Delfausse with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. She tours regularly with guitarist Joel Brown (Bacchiocchi-Brown Duo) and also with Zell on percussion. She has performed with the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Catskill Symphony, and The Albany Pro Musica. She recently played a chamber music concert at the Minato Mirai concert hall in Yokohama, Japan. Bacchiocchi- Stewart's academic achievements include a M.M. from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a B.M. from Ithaca College. She has participated in the Aspen Music Festival, the Colorado College Music Festival and the Zurich 2000 Masterclass series. Bacchiocchi-Stewart is currently pursuing her DMA in Flute Performance at The Peabody Conservatory of Music. She is a faculty associate at Peabody and the flute professor at FSU, where she also teaches woodwind methods classes and directs the flute ensemble.
Zell’s broad skills as a percussionist include solo percussion, timpani, chamber music, orchestral percussion and theatrical percussion. Zell currently serves as Principal Timpanist of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, a position he won during the senior year of his undergraduate studies. As a freelance percussionist, Zell is active throughout Maryland, having performed with the Maryland Symphony and the Baltimore Sinfonietta, and also has extensive private teaching engagements. Zell performs regularly throughout the East Coast with Bacchiocchi-Stewart, and also collaborates frequently with percussionist Ji Hye Jung, winner of the 2006 International Marimba Competition in Linz. He earned his bachelor's degree in music performance from the Peabody Conservatory where he was a student of Robert van Sice.
