FSU Cultural Events Series to Present Hit Musical "Crazy for You"
01/05/2001

The hit musical "Crazy for You" promises to chase away those winter blues with a swingin' good time, '30s style, on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. in Frostburg State University's Performing Arts Center's Drama Theatre. This Mainstage Production is part of FSU's Cultural Events Series. Loosely based on Ira and George Gershwin's "Girl Crazy," the show features unforgettable tunes, unbeatable choreography and lots of laughs. As the New York Times says, "The miracle that has been worked here…is to take some of the greatest songs ever written for Broadway and Hollywood and reawaken the impulse that first inspired them." Among the 19 Gershwin tunes featured are the classics "Embraceable You," "I Got Rhythm," "But Not for Me" and "Bidin' My Time."

The choreography by Susan Stroman embodies the show's unstoppable energy, with its imaginative use of influences from earlier shows, musical and lyrical elements from the songs, a motley collection of homespun props and a top-notch group of dancers.

The plotline is classic, zany boy-meets-girl, boy-loses girl, boy-gets girl so popular during the '30s. Rich playboy Bobby Child's yearns to perform in "Zangler's Follies" on Broadway with his showgirl friends, despite Mother's disapproval and desire that he settle down with his fiancée Irene. So Mummy dispatches her errant son to take care of family business, foreclosing on an old vaudeville theater in Deadrock, Nev. But once there, Bobby falls for the theater owner's daughter Polly and to win her, promises to bring the Follies to Deadrock to save the theater. Of course, things don't quite go according to plan and things get wild. Yes, there is a happy ending.

Bring the family to see what the New Yorker called the "inspired nonsense" that win nine Tony awards, including "Best Musical," "Best Book" and "Best Choreography."

A dinner-theatre special in partnership with Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant will be available before each performance.

For information, reservations and menu selection for the dinner-theatre, contact the Lane Center Box Office at (301) 687-4411, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Based on availability, tickets may also be purchased at the PAC box office one hour prior to curtain.
