The Frostburg State University Dance Company, under the artistic direction of Dr. Barry Fischer, will present its 2002 winter dance concert Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 5 - 7, in the Performing Arts Center’s Drama Theatre. Thursday and Friday’s performances will be at 8 p.m., while Saturday’s performance is a 2 p.m. matinee.
The performance features the premiere of Fischer’s “Class,” a work based on the Martha Graham technique of modern dance that Fischer teaches at FSU from beginning to advanced levels. The piece illustrates each level with elements of Fischer’s choreography set to music composed by Elen Putman.
Fischer is also recreating a duet piece featuring Susan Manger and Lori Cannon and contributing “Carpe Diem,” a spiritually influenced all-women’s dance. Cannon will repeat “Charmer,” a solo piece she performed last spring to an enthusiastic audience. Lauren Remmert is contributing a group modern jazz piece accompanied by popular music.
Guest artist Claire Porter of New York’s Claire Porter and Portables Dance Company has contributed a piece for the entire company, “Reading Signs.” Fischer describes it as an “abstract work that utilizes text and rhythmical patterns in a humorous way.” Porter was recently in residence at FSU to work with the company on choreography.
Tickets are $8 for the general public and $4 each for children under 12 and FSU students with a current ID and can be purchased beginning Monday, Dec. 2, at the Performing Arts Center Box Office, open Monday - Friday from 1-4 p.m. They will also be available at the door one hour before each performance.
