Frostburg State University's 2000-2001 International Film Series continues with "East is East, " on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. in Lane Center room 201. The series is sponsored by Center Stage and the Lane Center & Campus Activities.
Set in the early 70's, this 1999 British film centers on the conflicts experienced when a Pakistani family falls under the influence of contemporary English mores. Fish-and-chips shop owner Om Puri, the strict Muslim father of seven, expects his brood to follow in his footsteps. But his six sons and daughter have their own ideas, and head in decidedly non-traditional directions after the eldest sun runs away from home rather than comply with an arranged marriage. When the next two sons discover that a similar fate awaits them, they rebel, with repercussions that force the family to totally reconsider their family structure.
This and future film series showings are free and open to the public. "East is East" has a running time of 96 minutes.
