FSU Organizations Coordinate Food Drives for Thanksgiving Baskets and Local Food Bank
Every year, the FSU Office of Volunteerism and National Service and the A STAR! in Western Maryland program collect and deliver Thanksgiving baskets for needy families in the Cumberland area. In addition, FSU’s Recreation Society hosted a “Climbing for Food” event in early December for the Frostburg Food Pantry.
This year, 83 baskets were donated to local families and around 100 pounds of canned goods were given to the Frostburg Food Pantry. AmeriCorps members serving in Allegany County, the staff of the Office of Volunteerism and National Service, staff from the FSU Cultural Events Series, brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon and members of the Marketing Club all came together to give local families a Thanksgiving they may not have otherwise enjoyed.
The Thanksgiving baskets are filled with everything a family could need for Thanksgiving, including stuffing, potatoes, turkey or ham, vegetables, pies and much more. The baskets are donated by FSU organizations for local families and are delivered the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Names of the families in need are collected from the Frostburg Food Pantry and the Western Maryland Food Bank. In previous years, more baskets than names were collected and all leftover food was donated to the Western Maryland Food Bank.
The “Climbing for Food” event was also a huge success with over 50 participants and many boxes of food donations. Recreation Society members Tiffany DePaoli and Tyler Baxter coordinated the event.
