As culmination of three weeks of modern dance instruction and performance, Frostburg State University will present "Dance Legends: An Evening of Modern Dance," featuring performances by students and some of the greatest performers in the modern dance world. The performance will be Saturday, Aug. 5, at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Drama Theatre.
The concert will include guest appearances by Janet Eilber and Claire Porter. Eilber, in her years as a principal dancer with the former Martha Graham Dance Company, soloed at the White House, was partnered by Rudolf Nureyev and danced many of Graham's greatest roles. Porter, a modern dance performance artist, and her company, Portables, are internationally recognized for using theatrical elements and humor in performances.
Other performances will be by students from the FSU Summer Dance Retreat and members of the Martha Graham Dance Ensemble, a group that has temporarily suspended operations in a licensing dispute. They will be performing choreography by instructors at the Retreat: dance legend Pearl Lang, Kenneth Topping, who is also director of the Martha Graham Dance Ensemble, and Tancredo Tavares. Choreography by Isadora Duncan, Sophie Maslow and Anna Sokolow will also be performed.
In addition, a student from the Retreat will perform "Harmonica Breakdown," by modern dance pioneer Jane Dudley.
Tickets are $10 and may be reserved by calling (301) 687-3163.
