02/13/2008

Three former classmates and graduates of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music will share their talents with the public during a Faculty/Guest Artist concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in the Pealer Recital Hall at Frostburg State University. The free performance will feature Mark Gallagher, FSU’s assistant professor of clarinet and music theory, on clarinet, Kenneth Kwo on viola and Frank Corliss on piano, and include works by Kurtag, Mozart and Bruch.

Gallagher has performed with Musique Vivante of Paris, the Contemporary Music Forum of Washington, Washington Opera, United States Navy Band, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Bronx Symphony, New York City Ballet Orchestra and the Skylight Opera Theatre Orchestra. He is a winner of the Artist International Competition in New York City, has recorded with the Albany Records label and can be heard on the Eastman “American Music” Series.

Kwo has been a member of the Tri-City Symphony of Iowa, the Northwood Orchestra and the Colorado Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also performed at numerous summer festivals, including the Coronado Music Festival in Tucson, the Festival of the Lakes in northern Michigan and with the Swannanoa Chamber Players in North Carolina. He is a member of the Florida Orchestra, which performs in the tri-city area of Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg.

In the fall of 2006 Corliss joined the faculty of the Bard College Conservatory of Music in New York. Prior to that he was for many years a staff pianist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus as well as the Director of Music at the Walnut Hill School, one of the nation’s premier private secondary arts schools. A frequent performer on the Boston Symphony Prelude Concert series, Corliss also performs throughout the United States as a chamber musician and collaborative pianist. Corliss has worked as a musical assistant for Yo Yo Ma and has assisted Ma in the musical preparation of many new works for performance and recording, including concertos by Elliot Carter, Richard Danielpour, Tan Dun, John Harbison, Leon Kirchner, Peter Lieberson, Christopher Rouse and John Williams. Corliss can be heard in recording on Yo Yo Ma’s Grammy-winning SONY disc “Soul of the Tango” as well as the Koch International disc of music by Elliot Carter for chorus and piano with the John Oliver Chorale.
