FSU President Named to National Transportation Policy Task Force

This Week's Washington Meeting to Yield Policy Endorsements, Brief Policymakers
04/28/2010

Frostburg State University President Jonathan Gibralter has been appointed to the Second Nature’s National Transportation Policy Task Force, which is comprised of college and university presidents with the goal of combining institutions that are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and national transportation policy.

Gibralter was recognized for his efforts in sustainability and his contributions to reduce FSU’s greenhouse emissions, including the goal to be carbon-neutral by 2030. He is one of two university presidents from Maryland to be named to the task force.

The National Transportation Policy Task Force is a project of Second Nature, working in partnership with Transportation for America. Second Nature has created a national transportation policy task force of about a dozen college and university presidents to develop principles and policy recommendations to help ensure federal transportation policy takes both climate goals and the priorities of higher education into account.

Historically, national transportation policy has not given much weight to energy or climate concerns or the special challenges facing colleges and universities. Transportation accounts for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions for most higher education institutions and more than half the emissions for most community colleges. Leaders of colleges and universities that are developing climate action plans appreciate the practical challenges of reducing transportation-related emissions and are implementing a variety of innovative solutions, both on campus and in collaboration with surrounding communities.

The task force will share its recommendations with policymakers and work to engage other higher education leaders to elevate the national dialogue about national transportation policy.
