FSU Professor Barbara Hurd Will Read from “Walking the Wrack Line”
11/03/2008

Frostburg State University’s Department of English and the Center for Creative Writing present Dr. Barbara Hurd , who will read from her newly released book, “Walking the Wrack Line: On Tidal Shift and What Remains,” on Monday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Main Street Books in Frostburg. Hurd, an evocative nature writer, is a professor in the English Department at FSU.

“Walking the Wrack Line” explores diverse beaches from Massachusetts to Morocco in a series of poetic essays. Ann Fischer-Wirth, author of “Five Terraces,” says “This is a beautiful book. It is as skillfully constructed as a poem, and like a poem its meanings widen. It is a series of fascinating, informative nature essays, but more deeply it is a series of meditations on ‘what might be rescued from near-destruction, from silence, from invisibility’.” The book is the third installment in Hurd’s environmental meditations trilogy, which also includes “Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs and Human Imagination” and “Entering the Stone: On Caves and Feeling Through the Dark.”

The reading is free and open to the public. A reception and a book signing will follow. For more information, contact the Center for Creative Writing at 301-687-4024 or nightsun@frostburg.edu.
