Frostburg State University professors Micheal McAlexander and Dr. John Lombardi, along with Mass Communication students Brett Fox and Jimmy Griffin, joined a group of injured veterans in February on a weekend ski trip to the Canaan Valley Resort in north-central West Virginia. The event was sponsored by the non-profit organization, A Gathering of Mountain Eagles (GME), whose mission is to provide opportunities for combat wounded American military service members and their families to enjoy the therapeutic effects of adventure activities.
McAlexander, who teaches video production and screenwriting in the Mass Communication department, captured footage of the wounded warriors in action. He is working on a documentary about the veterans and the work the GME does. “The GME are a great bunch of former servicemen and women who got together to help out wounded veterans and show them that their lives can be just as rich and full as everyone else’s,” McAlexander said.
One veteran, a man missing his leg, taught the others how to ski. The documentary will feature action on the slopes and intimate moments with the wounded warriors. “I’m in the early stages of production and hope to get some grant funding to finish the project,” McAlexander said. He will have a special screening at FSU once the documentary is completed.
