Frostburg State University’s annual Relay for Life, with a theme of Knock Cancer Out of the Park, broke its fundraising record again this year by raising $63,434.89. This makes a total of nearly $400,000 raised for the American Cancer Society since FSU’s relay began 12 years ago.

Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society that raises money for research and funds services for people who have cancer and their caregivers. In advance of the Friday, April 26, event, more than 800 people and 54 teams – students, faculty and staff – had registered to walk, with more than 1,000 participants coming out on the evening of the event. Chele’s Stars raised the most money at $9,378, followed by the What’s Up Docs (FSU’s Pre-Professional Medical Society) at $8,220.67. The FSU combined Greek Life teams raised $11,264.43. Relay for Life, coordinated by FSU’s Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, is the campus’ largest single volunteer effort each year, encompassing all areas of the campus community.

“I am thrilled by these results and extraordinarily proud of our University community,” said FSU President Jonathan Gibralter, who also participated in the relay. “Particular credit is due to our students, who plan for this all year. They work incredibly hard to make it happen.”

While the initial $60,000 goal was met, pledges are still being collected to reach the $64,000 stretch goal. To contribute, visit www.relayforlife.org/fsumd or take donations to the Braddock House, 20 Braddock Rd. in Frostburg. Additional sponsors included Zen Shi Sushi, She’s So Pretty, the FSU Residence Hall Association, the FSU Cultural Events Series and Aramark.
