FSU Scholarship for Business Majors Funded by PNC Includes Unique Focus on Student-to-Student Mentorship
FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State University announced today that it received a $10,000 grant from The PNC Foundation to endow a scholarship in its College of Business.

The PNC College of Business Presidential Merit Scholar Award will be awarded to a full-time FSU senior with a declared major in the College of Business and an overall grade point average of at least 3.5 who is actively engaged in mentoring peers.

“Everyone can benefit from having a mentor or serving as a mentor,” said Gordon M. Cooley, PNC regional president in Western Maryland, speaking on behalf of the PNC Foundation. “Encouraging students to be leaders, and to help others, creates an opportunity for students to develop critical leadership skills early on. This new scholarship will recognize not only academic achievement but a commitment to helping others in the community.”

The PNC scholarship is among a growing number of funds that support the Presidential Merit Scholarships program, a fundraising effort led by FSU President Jonathan Gibralter and the FSU Foundation to secure $2.5 million in merit-based scholarships for high-academic achievers over the next five years. PNC’s predecessor banks had funded two smaller scholarships at Frostburg. This new funding from the PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, combined with the two smaller scholarships, endows the scholarship for the future.

In addition to serving as mentors to fellow students, recipients of the PNC College of Business Presidential Merit Scholar Award are expected to serve as role models for undergraduate students. A College of Business committee, made up of faculty and students, will identify potential candidates for the scholarship. The recipient is ultimately selected by Dr. Ahmad Tootoonchi, dean of the College of Business. Applicants might include students who lead organizations and clubs, serve as interns or tutors, or participate in or lead community service activities – basically, students who have demonstrated they intend to share their knowledge and experience with their peers.

“We always celebrate scholarships but, in this instance, we want to marry the sense of community and leadership with scholarship; we are expecting more from students to whom a lot has been given,” said Sudhir Singh, associate dean for FSU’s College of Business. “Student leaders, whether it is within the classroom or outside of it, are in a wonderful position to influence each other and learn from each other. You want students to guide each other and take responsibility for their own learning.”

“The education delivered by the University is top notch and lays the foundation for lifelong learning and future success,” Cooley said. “The mentoring element is included to reinforce for students the value of being supportive of those around them.”
