FSU Student Completes Practicum with County United Way
08/19/2008

Frostburg State University senior and Bear, Del., native Desiree Lake gained some valuable job experience while completing her 11- week practicum with Cumberland’s County United Way this summer.

The practicum, a capstone requirement for Lake’s major in communication studies at FSU, helped her develop communications skills in areas such as writing and disseminating press releases, completing public service announcements and designing invitations. To meet FSU’s requirement, Lake also completed daily journal entries, a press release and an eight-page paper illustrating various communication theories she encountered at County United Way.

“My coursework at the University, especially in the Communication Studies Department, provided me with all of the skills needed to complete this practicum,” Lake said.

“I was very impressed with Desiree’s writing abilities, and her invitation design for the August Campaign Kickoff was excellent,” said Mary Beth Pirolozzi, executive director for the County United Way. “I do hope she is able to return and work with the County United Way in the future. All of the office staff really enjoyed working with her.”

Dr. Elesha Ruminski, assistant professor of communication studies and Lake’s practicum advisor, could not be happier with Lake’s accomplishments this summer.

“Desiree’s work with the County United Way was impressive from my perspective—she had the opportunity to have an intensive, hands-on experience with a significant leader in our community, Mary Beth Pirolozzi, and she successfully carried out her public relations tasks, reaching the highest of standards. … The Communication Studies Department at FSU could not ask for a better practicum experience for our students in terms of providing a realistic professional workload that permits practical skills application.”

Lake will graduate in spring of 2009. She is also majoring in mass communications and double-minoring in public relations and French. She is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the communication studies honor society; secretary for the Communication Club; and sister of the Delta Zeta National Sorority. Lake is the daughter of Gary and Becky Lake.
