FSU To Host Annual Mathematics Symposium
04/09/2010

Frostburg State University Department of Mathematics will host its 38th Annual Mathematics Symposium that will take place on Saturday, May 1. Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will focus on mathematics content, teaching methodologies, or connections between mathematics and other subjects.

A variety of talks will be presented in the morning, covering topics such as “Do Numbers Give you the Whole Picture?” and “Bringing Water to Samos: Practical Geometry in Ancient Greece.” There will even be a “Singing Math Teacher.”

The featured speaker will be Brian Hayes, a Senior Writer for “American Scientist.” Since 1993, Hayes has been writing the “Computing Science” column for the magazine. He has been a visitor at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley and at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste. Hayes will present his talk, “Gauss vs. The Vile Brute,” at 1 p.m.

A tentative schedule of speakers and topics can be found at the Symposium Web page www.frostburg.edu/dept/math/. The sessions are open to the public, but registration is required. Cost is $25 for the general public; FSU students who are enrolled in a mathematics class may attend free of charge.

The FSU Mathematics Symposium is partially funded by the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics, an FSU Faculty Development Award and by the Office of the Provost.
