This summer, Frostburg State University will offer three opportunities to local students interested in dance.
Young men and women aged 13-17 from the tri-state area have the opportunity to participate in the 3rd Annual Frostburg Summer Dance Retreat from July 20 to August 2.
Students who reside in Western Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania are eligible to attend this special, community cultural event with an emphasis on modern dance. No previous study of modern dance is required. Dr. Barry Fischer, founder/director of the Retreat and associate professor of dance at FSU, along with members of the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, will teach Martha Graham technique© and repertory. Ballet classes will also be offered. Students will not reside on campus.
Classes begin Monday, July 23, and run through Friday, Aug. 2. Ballet and modern dance are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:15 to 11:30 a.m. On Tuesday and Thursday, modern dance is offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Classes will be held in either the Cordts Physical Education Center or the Performing Arts Center.
Participants will receive tickets to attend a Bare Bones Performance on Friday, July 20, and a Final Gala Performance on Sunday, August 4.
The cost is $200, and Thursday, June 6, is the last day to register. If possible, please register in person in the Performing Arts Center between 4 and 7 p.m. For more information, call Susan Manger at (301) 687-4145.
In addition, a Children's Dance Camp offering modern dance, ballet and repertory is offered Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the dance studio located in the Cordts Center. Faculty include Fischer, Susan Manger and Amy Gordon. A performance will be held the last day of camp.
The cost is $300, and the deadline to register is Friday, May 24. Contact Fischer at (301) 687-4730 for information and a registration form.
For dance students 16 and up with an intermediate or advanced level of training in modern dance or ballet, the Frostburg Summer Dance Retreat offers a choice of a two- or four-week residential program.
