11/12/2008

Frostburg State University’s will offer the Badges for Baseball Program for area youth as part of its Healthy Choices, Healthy Children curriculum. The character education program, which is free of charge, is designed for children in grades 3 through 8 with events on the following dates: Nov. 15, Dec. 6, Dec. 13, Jan. 31, Feb. 7, Feb. 14 and Feb. 21.

Badges for Baseball was developed by the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation as a character education program that uses the philosophies that Cal Ripken Sr. practiced on the playing field to teach youths how to live off the field. Topics such as sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership and communication are among those that will be taught. The inclusive, baseball-oriented game Quickball, which can be played year-round, will also be taught. The Badges for Baseball program is funded through a grant from the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.

There will be a drop-off point at FSU, as well as free transportation from the Salvation Army Community Center in Cumberland. Buses will leave the Salvation Army at 10 a.m. and return at 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
