FSU Wind Ensemble Presents Mother’s Day Concert
05/07/2004

The Frostburg State University Wind Ensemble will present the annual Mother’s Day Concert on Sunday, May 9, at 3 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. The concert, sponsored by the FSU Department of Music, is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Noel T. Kunkle, the Ensemble will begin its program with “Overture” to “Candide” by Leonard Bernstein (transcribed for concert band by Clare Grundman) and two movements from Robert W. Smith’s “The Divine Comedy: The Inferno,” which depicts man’s damnation in Hell, and Paradiso, which depicts the sounds of joy, peace, love and hope in Heaven. The group will then perform “Parable” by Elliot Del Borgo, a symphonic poem based upon the hymn “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?” In closing the first half, the Ensemble will feature Nathan Royer in a euphonium solo of “Napoli,” arranged by Frank Simon. The second half of the program begins with a British march, “The Centurion,” by Philip Sparke. The concert will conclude by performing five scenes from Melville’s “Moby Dick” as presented in “Of Sailors and Whales” by W. Francis McBeth. Dr. Keith Schlegel of FSU’s English Department will narrate and introduce Ishmael, Queequeg, Father Mapple and Ahab. The final movement concludes with “The White Whale.”
