FSU’s Volunteer Organization ECHOSTARS Winner of Two Service Awards in One Week
The 2013-2014 ECHOSTARS! members, part of the AmeriCorps program at Frostburg State University, won two service awards in one week.

ECHOSTARS, a group of 60 AmeriCorps members who attend Frostburg State University, has received two statewide service awards in one week: the Community Partnership Award from Maryland-DC Campus Compact (MDCCC) and a Governor’s Service Award as a Special AmeriCorps Honoree.

The Community Partnership Award recognizes and honors one outstanding campus-community partnership that produces measurable improvements in people’s lives while enhancing higher education in the process. This award honors a partnership that has successfully demonstrated a commitment between higher education and the community, resulting in a tangible community impact. The winners were honored at the 2013 Presidents’ Institute MDCCC CONNECTS (Communities Organizing Networks Now to Engage Citizens Through Service) Awards Ceremony at George Washington University on Oct. 30.

The 27 recipients of the Governor’s Service Awards reflect the diversity of Maryland and demonstrate its spirit of service. Recipients were selected in 11 categories, including individual, organizational and group volunteers. In addition, special recognition was given to individuals and groups celebrating significant accomplishments. The winners were recognized at the 2013 Governor’s Service Awards Ceremony on Nov. 4 in Annapolis.

ECHOSTARS, which stands for Empowering Communities, Helping Others, Service Through Action, Resources and Sustainability, are part of a livinglearning-serving community who serve Allegany County by mentoring youth, assisting senior citizens, providing family support and protecting the environment. They also help to educate children about healthy lifestyles and wellness choices. In 2012, members served at the local elementary schools, the YMCA, the Salvation Army, the senior center and Read to Succeed, a mentoring program hosted at FSU. In addition they have helped the Frostburg Food Pantry as well as the Western Maryland Food Bank with food drives and distribution to help needy families. They have also helped to provide free seasonal events such as fall festivals, storybook holidays, healthy kids days and spring family festivals. Together, ECHOSTARS AmeriCorps members have served more than 15,000 hours in 2012.
