01/18/2011

The Frostburg State University Activities for Life program will offer various tumbling classes for children ranging in age from 3 and up on Thursdays, beginning Feb. 3. All classes will be held in Cordts Physical Education Center room 170.

The preschool class is for children ages 3 and 4 and is limited to 12 students with little or no formal tumbling training. It will be conducted through April 14 (no class March 24) from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The class will include activities such as cartwheels, rolls and other simple movements. It is designed to teach flexibility, strength, muscle control and coordination. This class requires a parent to participate with each child.

The beginner class is for children ages 5 to 12 and is limited to 15 participants with a minimum of 7. It will be held through March 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will include basic floor tumbling exercises and some work on the low balance beam.

The intermediate class is for all ages and is limited to 15 students with a minimum of 7. It runs through March 3 and meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Requirements for this class are a solid cartwheel and working toward a solid round off. Participants in this class will work on skills that work toward a back handspring, such as handstand holds, forward rolls, snap downs, jump-backs on a cheese mat, right/left side cartwheels, one-armed cartwheels, aerials with spot, backbend kick overs with spot and front handsprings over a barrel.

An advanced class is also for all ages and is limited to 15 students with a minimum of 7. It will be held through March 3 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Requirements for this class are a solid round off and working toward a solid standing back handspring and a solid round-off back handspring. Participants will work on series passes, round-off back handspring tucks, round-off tucks, standing tucks and punch fronts.

The intermediate and advanced classes will be combined if there are not enough participants to hold each class individually.

Instructors will be Eugene Younger and Sam Cody. The registration deadline is Monday, Jan. 31. For information and registration, contact AFL coordinator Amy Nazelrod at 301-687-7934 or anazelrod@frostburg.edu.
