The Department of Music at Frostburg State University presents a joint junior recital by flutist Amanda Kiser and trumpeter Brooke Speake accompanied by pianist Nancy Witmer on Sunday, April 10, at 5 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Performing Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.
The recital provides the opportunity to hear a flute and a trumpet duet: Kiser and Speake will perform Howard J. Buss’ “Time Capsule Duet.” The four movements tell a story, beginning with a cheerful first movement “Daybreak,” moving to a unique “Chorale,” building up with a rounded third movement “Rendezvous” and ending with a fanfare and dance “Homeward Bound.”
Kiser will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s “Sonata in C Major,” Claude Debussy’s “Syrinx,” Edgard Varese’s “Density 21.5” and Paul Hindemith’s “Sonate for Flute and Piano,” a piece written during Hindemith’s escape from Germany, that moves from melodic and cheerful to melancholy and pensive, concluding with a fast-paced march that portrays armies marching across Europe.
Speake will perform Joseph Haydn’s “Trumpet Concerto in E-flat” and George Frideric Handel’s “Aria Con Variationi,” which highlights the expressive and technical capabilities of the trumpet.
Kiser studies flute with Pamela Murchison, is member of Delta Omicron music fraternity and is on the dean’s list. She anticipates graduating in December 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in music education and performance. She is the daughter of Barb and Wayne Kiser of Brienigsville, Pa., and is a 2008 graduate of Downington West High School in Downington, Pa.
Speake studies trumpet with Derek Scott and expects to graduate in May 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in music education and a minor in math. She plans to become a music teacher. She is the daughter of Paddie and Greg Stavely of Burtonsville, Md., and is a 2008 graduate of James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring, Md.
