FSU’s Brent Mitchell to Present Junior Recital
11/08/2011

Frostburg State University’s Department of Music will presents a junior recital by Brent Mitchell on alto saxophone, accompanied by pianist Dr. Bomi Lim Tunstall, on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 2:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Performing Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.

Mitchell will perform the very expressive and lyrical “Vocalise” (song without words) by Sergei Rachmaninoff; “Sonata” by Paul Creston in three movements, “With Vigor,” “With Tranquility” and “With Gaiety,” showcasing different musical techniques; and “Night Bird” by Karen Tanaka, in which the saxophone sounds like a bird at night – sometimes faint, and sometimes loud and prominent. He will also perform Fernande Decruck’s “Sonate en ut#” and John Cheetham’s “Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano.”

Mitchell studies saxophone with FSU instructor Timothy Powell, is an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, has been on the Dean’s List and was awarded a performance in this year’s annual President’s Concert. He is a 2006 graduate of Queen Anne’s County High School and expects to graduate from FSU in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in music management, with plans to work in the public scene of music, including live venues, radio and recording. He is the son of Deborah Mitchell of Centreville, Md., and Ron Mitchell of Queenstown, Md.
