FSU’s Center for Creative Writing to Host Community Workshops
11/07/2011

The Frostburg Center for Creative Writing, in partnership with the Allegany County Library System, ACT Personnel Service and A STAR! AmeriCorps, will host two five-week creative writing workshops at the Frostburg Public Library. There will be one series of workshops for elementary school students and one for high school students. They are free and open to all elementary and high school students.

The workshops will take place every Tuesday, from Nov. 15 through Dec. 13. Workshops will meet in the Toll House Room and the Library Meeting Room of the Main Street library from 4 to 6 p.m. The elementary school workshop will be taught by local poet Nina Forsythe, and the high school workshop will be taught by FSU graduate Darcy Gagnon.

The purpose is to get students excited about writing and to provide an atmosphere that cultivates curiosity and creativity. Each workshop will combine lessons on poetry or fiction with writing exercises. They are designed to provide young, beginning writers with the skills and tools they need to mature as writers, while also providing them with a body of creative work by the end.

The Center for Creative Writing can accommodate middle school students in either of the workshops, and will place them according to their age. For information, contact Jessica Palumbo, A STAR! AmeriCorps volunteer and outreach coordinator for the Frostburg Center for Creative Writing, at jlpalumbo@frostburg.edu, or call the Center at 301-687-4340.

FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. To request accommodations through the ADA Compliance Office, call 301-687-4102 or use a Voice Relay Operator at 1-800-735-2258. -end-
