FSU’s Cultural Events Series Jazz Club Presents Javon Jackson Band
Internationally recognized tenor jazz saxophonist Javon Jackson brings his own style of jazz to Windsor Hall at Town Centre in downtown Cumberland on Friday, April 1, at 8 p.m. Presented by Frostburg State University’s Cultural Events Series Jazz Club, the Javon Jackson Band performance is a show that jazz enthusiasts will not want to miss. An educational session is also scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Jackson came into international prominence as a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; he toured and made many recordings with the legendary drummer. In addition to Blakey, Jackson has toured and recorded with Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Donald Byrd, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Richard Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller and Stanley Turrentine.

Jackson quickly established himself as a leader in jazz music and has toured throughout the world with the Javon Jackson Band. Playing professionally in clubs since the age of 16, he met and was mentored by jazz great Branford Marsalis. After graduating from Boston’s prestigious Berklee School of Music and earning a master’s degree in music, Jackson became a sought-after entertainer.

0As a recording artist, Jackson has appeared on over 125 recordings. Additionally, he has developed a formidable career as a band leader by recording and touring throughout the world. Jackson’s current musical group, the Javon Jackson Band, incorporates many styles, including jazz, funk, R&B and rock. He often departs from his hard bop jazz roots and adds a mix of soul/funk to produce a sound that is daring and honest.

Tickets for the Javon Jackson Band are $18 for adults and $13 for those under 17. Corporate and group discount ticket rates are also available. Tickets may be ordered by calling 301-687-3137 or online at http://ces.frostburg.edu.

As part of CES’ Arts for Enrichment series, on April 1 at 4:30 p.m., also at Windsor Hall, Jackson will present an interactive educational session in which he will share his love of acoustic jazz and talk about “selecting recordings that have special meaning for me,” while revisiting his days with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and paying tribute to performers that have inspired him, such as Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner and contemporary artist Corinne Bailey Rae. Participants will be able to interact with the artist. Reservations are required. For more information, call 301-687-7420 or e-mail cesoutreach@frostburg.edu.

The Cultural Events Series is supported by grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
