FSU’s Cultural Events Series Presents ‘Bye Bye Birdie’
The tri-state region will have the chance to enjoy a long-time Broadway favorite when the Frostburg State University Cultural Events Series presents “Bye Bye Birdie” The Musical Preview Friday, Jan. 23, and Saturday, Jan. 24, to the Drama Theatre in the FSU Performing Arts Center. The Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 8 p.m. and the Saturday matinee starts at 3 p.m.

“Bye Bye Birdie” made its Broadway debut on April 14, 1960, and has been a favorite ever since. Originally titled “Let’s Go Steady,” the musical is a satire on American society, circa 1958. When rock star and teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie, whose character is based on Elvis Presley, is drafted into the Army, the nation’s teenagers go haywire and a nationwide contest is held in which one lucky girl wins a farewell kiss from Conrad on the “Ed Sullivan Show.” When 15-year-old Kim McAfee wins and Conrad’s whole entourage moves into her quiet town of Sweet Apple, Ohio, the result is chaos and a series of hilarious romantic complications. Lots of laughs and great songs including “Put On A Happy Face,” “One Last Kiss” and “What’s The Matter With Kids Today?” make this one of the most memorable musicals of all time.

Tickets for “Bye Bye Birdie” are $26 for adults and $18 for youth under 17. Group discount tickets are also available. Tickets may be ordered online at ces.frostburg.edu or by calling 301-687-3137.

The Cultural Events Series and this Art for Adjudicated Youth project are supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive. An agency of the Department of Business & Economic Development, the MSAC provides financial support and technical assistance to non-profit organizations, units of government, colleges and universities for arts activities. MSAC funding is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency which believes that a great nation deserves great art. This performance is made possible through the generous support of Best Western Braddock.
