FSU’s Department of Music 2005 Annual Mother’s Day Concert
04/29/2005

Frostburg State University Department of Music will present the 2005 Annual Mother’s Day Concert by the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Noel T. Kunkle on Sunday, May 8, at 3 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Pealer Recital Hall.

The featured musical presentation of the concert will be the complete work of Modest Mussorsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Upon hearing of the death of his good friend and painter Victor Hartman, Mussorsky was moved by the impression of what he had seen at the exhibition to feverishly compose ten little masterpieces based on Hartman’s quirky collection of character pieces. Composed for wind band in 2000 by John Boyd, “Promenades” us through the art gallery depicting “Gnome,” “The Market Place,” “Ballet of the Chicks in their Shells,” “Two Jews, One Rich, the Other Poor,” “Catacombae, Sepulcrum Romanum,” “The Hut on Fowl’s Leg (Baba Yaga)” and perhaps the best known movement “Great Gate of Kiev.”

The band will also perform “Variants on a Moravian Hymn” (Morning Star, O Cheering Sight) by James Barnes. “To Keep Thine Honor Bright” by Ann McGinty is a piece that honors the men and women of the United States Military Academy. The powerful coronation march “Crown Imperial” will complete the bands performance.
