Frostburg State University student Jaclyn Skeweris will perform her senior oboe recital, the soprano of the double-reed woodwinds, accompanied by pianist Hannah Lagno, on Sunday, April 10, at 3 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Performing Arts Center.
Skeweris will begin the recital with an introduction to the oboe with Georg Friedrich Handel’s “Sonate Nr. 3 Es-Dur,” performed with oboist Emily Madsen and Vaughn Williams’ “Oboe Concerto.”
Skeweris will then open the second half of her recital with a playful combination in which the oboe intertwines with a variety of percussion instruments and piano, performing Sy Brandon’s “Divertissment,” assisted by percussionist Justin Smith and pianist Erin Wheeler. “Divertissment” has six movements that express different scenarios in nature and society. Each piece has its own individual character; some portray dances and marches, and others the night and day.
She will conclude the recital with Jack Vees’ “Apocrypha” and “I Will Be With Your Mouth” by Edward Rosenberg III, using samples of live sounds, including birds, horses, marching and electronically produced sounds. The vocal line is recorded by Tom Burre and is used to tell the story throughout each movement.
Skeweris, an FSU music major who plans to graduate in December 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in music performance and psychology, has studied with Emily Madsen and Amy Galbraith. She is a member of Delta Omicron music fraternity and is first chair oboe in FSU’s Wind Ensemble. She was also named to the dean’s list. After graduating, she plans to attend graduate school for music performance, perform in a professional band or orchestra and study performance anxiety. She is the daughter of Denny Skeweris and Sue Halterman of Oakland, Md., and is a 2007 graduate of Southern Garrett High School.
