FSU’s Main Stage Presents Feminist Classic “Machinal”
ErinRose Sincevich
University Theatre’s Main Stage series will present Sophie Treadwell’s feminist classic “Machinal” on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 29 and March 1, and Thursday though Saturday, March 6 through 8, at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in the Frostburg State University Performing Art Center’s Drama Theatre.

“Machinal,” a 20th-century classic, is based on the 1927 trial of Ruth Snyder, the first woman to be put to death in New York’s electric chair for the murder of her husband. Trained as a reporter and realizing that the legal system and most cultural norms were dictated by male interest, Treadwell responded with a powerful play about an ordinary young woman whose inescapable entrapment in an oppressively mechanized, materialistic and impersonal world drives her to commit murder. Expressionistic in style, “Machinal” presents events as seen through the eyes and the haunting perspective of the main character.

Cost of admission is $5 for students and $10 for non-students. For more information or reservations, call (301) 687-7462 Monday though Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or stop by the box office in the Performing Arts Center Lobby Monday through Friday from noon to 2 p.m.
