FSU’s Social Work Program Earns High Marks, Reaccreditation
07/24/2007

The Department of Social Work at Frostburg State University recently received affirmation of its academic excellence in preparing students for successful careers in social work when its baccalaureate program was reaccredited by the Council on Social Work Education, one of 645 programs to earn accreditation nationwide.

“National accreditation confirms the quality of Frostburg's program and is required for graduates to be licensed as social workers,” said Dr. Stephen Simpson, FSU’s Provost and Academic Vice President. “I want to recognize the hard work of the faculty, staff, students and internship supervisors in the community that earned the program a top rating based on national professional standards."

Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, FSU president, also praised the program for its achievement.

“Social workers are professionals whose clinical skills and policy knowledge support many important institutions in the state of Maryland and nationally. … They are primary advocates for people who require assistance of many kinds, including social services and social support,” he said. “Accreditation signifies a standard has been met. It says that our social work program provides the requisite knowledge and information to create highly regarded social workers.”

To receive reaccreditation, FSU produced a comprehensive self-study and underwent a review by CSWE site visitors, who highlighted FSU’s key strengths in their official report, including the faculty members’ diverse areas of expertise that compliment each other and how students are active in researching bills introduced in the General Assembly and in advocating for legislation.

“When a student graduates from an accredited social work program they are eligible to apply for advanced standing in any accredited master Master of Social Work program, which means they could be advanced through part of or all of the whole first year toward an MSW,” said Dr. Terry Russell, department chair, who noted that FSU’s program was first accredited in 1995.

Situated in the mountains of Allegany County, Frostburg State University is one of the 13 institutions of the University System of Maryland. FSU is a comprehensive, residential regional university and serves as an educational and cultural center for Western Maryland.
