FSU’s University Theatre to Present “Ruined” Addressing Democratic Republic of the Congo
FSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present the highly acclaimed play “Ruined” by Lynn Nottage on Dec. 2, 3, 7 (a benefit performance), 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance on Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. All performances will take place in the FSU Performing Arts Center’s F. Perry Smith Studio Theatre.
Directed by Mairzy Yost-Rushton, this 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is set in a shrewd businesswoman’s brothel in today’s war-torn Democratic of the Congo. As Mama Nadi both protects and profits from the prostitutes under her charge – women whose bodies have been used by government soldiers and rebel forces alike as a systematic tactic of war – all sides of a complex reality simmer and boil in moving, courageous and brutal detail. Developed through the author’s own interviews with women in Africa, “Ruined” mines through the shattered dreams of a lost country’s people to find a voice filled with humanity, hope and song.
Proceeds from the special benefit performance on Dec. 7 will go to City of Joy, a safe haven in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where women can heal and rebuild their lives. For more information, go to www.vday.org.
Tickets are $6 for students and $12 for the general public. Call the Theatre and Dance box office at 301-687-7462 to reserve tickets (Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m.).
