Golden Named Interim Dean of FSU College of Education
Dr. Clarence Golden
Dr. Clarence Golden has been named interim dean of Frostburg State University’s College of Education effective July 1 by Provost Stephen Simpson. Golden will replace Dr. Kenneth Witmer, who accepted a position at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.

Golden, a 43-year veteran in the field of education, previously served as associate dean and interim associate dean for the College of Education and chair of the Department of Educational Professions. In addition to his experience at the university level and in public schools, Golden authored a nationally recognized leadership program in 2000 and 2007 through the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) of the National Policy Board for Educational Administration. He earned an Associate in Arts degree from Allegany College of Maryland, Bachelor of Science in Education, Master of Science in Administration and Supervision and a Master of Science in Management from Frostburg State University and a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland, College Park. He also serves as national college program reviewer for ELCC and as an evaluator of principal/superintendent licensure assessments nationwide with Educational Testing Service.

“I am pleased that Dr. Golden agreed to take on the role of interim dean,” Simpson said of Golden. “He brings a wealth of experience as a school principal, a leader in regional education circles, and as a highly respected faculty member and administrator at FSU.”

Witmer joined the FSU Department of Educational Professions in 1986. With a background teaching high school physics and physical science, he specialized in secondary science education as well as research and statistics, educational psychology and cooperative learning. Through the years, he guided the College in developing a number of transformational programs, including the doctorate in Educational Leadership collaboration with the University of Maryland, the rural-to-urban teacher internship program, the restructuring of the College and the intersession program that provides study abroad opportunities for teacher candidates. As dean, Witmer became one of the true leaders in the state of Maryland and positioned FSU’s College of Education to be in line with the standards set by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
