Grammy Winner Poncho Sanchez to Perform at Frostburg State University
Grammy-winner Poncho Sanchez.
Grammy-winner Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band will perform at Frostburg State University's Cordts Center Main Arena on Saturday, Oct.13, at 8 p.m. This event is part of FSU's Cultural Events Series.

Born in Texas, Sanchez grew up in California to the strains of Afro-Cuban music. He began playing the congas in high school and got his big break when he had the chance to play with his idol, vibraphonist Cal Tjader. For the next seven years, he played congas in Tjader's band. He formed his own group in 1980. The band has issued 18 recordings, including 1999's Grammy-winning "Latin Soul." His latest release, "Soul of the Conga," features jazz giants Terence Blanchard on trumpet and Joey DeFrancesco on organ.

The veteran conguero - translated "conga player" - is on a mission to share his musical passion for what he describes as homegrown American music for everybody.

"Our main goal is always to keep Latin jazz alive, growing and moving, while being authentic to the music we love," says Sanchez. "This music is not just for Latino people. It was born in the United States, and it is American music."

Critics agree. "As Elvis is to rock and James Brown is to soul, Poncho Sanchez is to salsa…particularly to the congas…" says Scott Lenz of the Los Angeles Times.
