ALTOONA, Pa. —
Freshman Amanda Drake (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill)
scored a pair of goals and senior Lindsay Hoffman (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson)
scored one goal and added two assists as the Frostburg State women’s soccer team shutout Penn State Altoona, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon.
FSU improves to 6-5 overall and 5-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while PSA falls to 4-5-2 and 1-3-2 in the league.
For the moment, FSU moves into a tie for first-place in the AMCC with Penn State Behrend. However, the Lions travel to Pitt-Bradford tomorrow evening with a chance to pull ahead of the Bobcats with a win or a tie.
Frostburg State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Penn State Altoona, when freshman Christine Fitzgerald (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) scored a goal just over 10 minutes in the ballgame. Hoffman dribbled the ball up the right side and centered a pass to Fitzgerald, who slipped it past the keeper, Carol Opiela.
The visitors added to their lead at 22:44 when Drake netted her fifth goal of the season. Junior Jen Naylor (Riva, Md./St. Mary's) took a shot that was saved off the post by Opiela and Drake was there for the rebound which found the back of the net.
Hoffman gave the Bobcats a 3-0 cushion in the 37th minute when she took a pass from junior Anita Wickerham (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) and beat a defender before tallying her only goal of the match.
In the first half, the Bobcats led 3-0 in goals and 13-2 in shots.
In the second half, FSU added two goals to seal the win.
The first tally of the period came when Drake scored her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute. Off a corner kick, sophomore Tori Walter (Frederick, Md./Frederick) headed a ball to Drake who knocked it home.
The final score of the contest came in the 67th minute when Hoffman passed the ball to freshman Kelly Sanzone (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) who scored her first collegiate goal from 25-yards out.
Frostburg State outshot Penn State Altoona 8-2, in the second stanza and 21-4, throughout the contest.
Freshman Stephanie Gwinn (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) started the game for FSU playing 69:38 making two saves while sophomore Amanda Banaszak (Warrenton, Va./Faquier) played the other 22:22. Opiela played the entire game for the Lions making five saves and allowing five goals.
The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, October 14 when they host Penn State Behrend at Noon.
