More than two thousand members of the Frostburg State University community attended the Candlelight Vigil Service in memory of Brandon M. Carroll on Tuesday evening, April 20.
The program started with a Candlelight March that departed from the Upper Quad at 8:30 p.m. and concluded in the Cordts P.E. Center Main Arena at 9:00 p.m.
Once in the Cordts Center, the service began with a brief welcome from Student Government President Joshua Humelsine, followed by the FSU Chamber Choir singing “Calvary.”
Humelsine returned to the podium following the choir for a brief introduction. The United Voices Under God’s Dominion gospel choir then performed a musical selection.
Frostburg State University President Dr. Jonathan Gibralter stepped to the podium for some powerful and emotional remarks about the tragedy followed a message from Brandon's great aunt, Juanita Terrell, who spoke on behalf of Brandon's family.
FSU police chief Cynthia Smith and Assistant Vice President for Student Services Bernard Wynder then spoke, followed by Head Men’s Basketball Coach Webb Hatch.
Coach Hatch ended his thoughts when senior tri-captain Nick Sefcik read an email that was sent to coach Hatch from the mother of a boy who had attended FSU’s basketball camp and was inspired by Brandon.
The most emotional section of the service followed when the entire FSU men’s basketball team gathered on stage to say a few words and recall memories of Brandon.
The service concluded with a performance from United Voices again, followed by brief statements from Dr. Spencer F. Deakin, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, and Father Edward S. Hendricks, Catholic chaplin.
The memorial was organized by SGA with the assistance of numerous campus offices.
