Jackson Leads Softball to Twinbill Split With La Roche
04/11/2002

PITTSBURGH - Senior Krissy Jackson (Frostburg, Md./Beall) went 3-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs to lead Frostburg State to a 9-8 win over La Roche College in game two of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Redhawk Field.

La Roche posted an 11-0 win in the opener behind the four-hit pitching of Amy Kurtz.

In a back-and-forth nightcap, the Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Jackson’s two-run home run in the first and built a 3-0 advantage on an RBI-triple by Jackson in the third.

The Redhawks (11-5, 5-1) rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead, but the Bobcats answered with a three-run fourth to regain the lead, 6-5.

Freshman Raelee Casazza (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) laced a RBI-single, and sophomore Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett) put FSU back in front with a two-run triple.

La Roche countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Kristy Pfister singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game.

However, Frostburg State (8-9-1, 5-4-1) moved ahead again in the sixth when Casazza smacked a one-out double, moved to third on a flyout by Foor and scored when Jackson laced a 3-2 pitch into right center for a single.

The Bobcats opened a 9-6 advantage with a pair of crucial runs in the seventh, as freshman Angela Giuffreda (Frederick, Md./Urbana) knocked in a run with a groundout and sophomore Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) added a RBI-single.

Those runs proved to be the difference, as La Roche scored twice in their final at bat on two hits and two Bobcat errors. The Redhawks had runners at second and third with one out, but Casazza recorded a strikeout and induced a foul out along the first base line to seal the victory and improve to 4-4 on the season.

Zych, Casazza, Foor and sophomore Lora Thomas (Bowie, Md./Bowie) each had two hits for FSU.

In the opener, La Roche broke open a scoreless game with a five-run third inning and added six more runs in the fourth to cruise to the victory.

Ashley Morgan drilled a three-run home run to cap the third, and the Redhawks capitalized on a pair of key Bobcat errors in the fourth for the big win.

Kurtz held FSU to just four hits in the five-inning effort and didn’t allow a runner past second base.

Bobcat freshman Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) took the loss after allowing 11 runs – but just three earned – on 10 hits. She is now 4-5 on the season.

Zych led the Bobcats with two hits in the opener.

Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday when it opens its new complex by hosting Pitt-Bradford in a key AMCC twinbill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
