Jazz Flutist Galen to Perform, Speak at FSU

Frostburg State University's Black Student Alliance is sponsoring a day of jazz in performance and lecture, featuring jazz flutist Galen, on Monday, March 8, culminating with a jazz poetry slam at 8 p.m. in the Lane University Center’s Loft. All of the day’s events are free and open to the public.

The welcome event at noon in Manicur Assembly Hall is a lecture/performance on “Women in Jazz.” During the event, participants will learn the five pillars of jazz, melody, harmony, rhythm, syncopation and improvisation, with a demonstration of how each element influences jazz. At 2 p.m., also in Manicur Hall, a second lecture will be presented on “Past, Present and Future. At 5 p.m., Galen will present a Flute Juice Jazz Performance in Manicur Assembly Hall. The jazz poetry slam, providing participants with the opportunity to demonstrate their own compositions with the passionate, melodic sounds of jazz, will follow at 8 p.m. in The Loft.

Galen, a master flutist and lecturer from Montclair, N.J., has a keen ability to transform an audience with the smooth, rich, passionate sound of his flute. His is an arranger, composer, director and educator who has performed and recorded with some of the world's greatest recording artists.
