Jones and Bednar Receive Weekly AMCC Honors
05/04/2004

FROSTBURG, MD - Freshman Chris Jones (Towson High/Baltimore, Md.) was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week and sophomore Collin Bednar (Glen Burnie/Millersville, Md.) was named AMCC Pitcher of the Week. Both players, who are newcomers this season to the Bobcats roster, guided the Bobcats to their third-ever AMCC Tournament championship and first since 1999.

Jones led the team in batting over the weekends four games as he hit .533, going 8-for-15. He also reached via a walk and was hit by a pitch. Combined he drove in four runs and scored five more in the conference tournament.

Jones was critical in the Bobcat Tournament championship as he went 2-4 with a three-run homerun and a sacrifice fly in the deciding game, which the Bobcats won 13-10 in ten innings.

He boosted a team-high .733 slugging percentage over the weekend and also was successful in his only stolen base attempt. He had at least one hit and got on base at least twice in every game this weekend.

Bednar, who got credit for the win in the championship game, pitched at least an inning in all four games. Total, he went six innings, allowing only three hits and struck out six. In the three wins for FSU in the tournament, he pitched five innings allowing just one run on two hits.

On the season, Bednar was the most productive pitcher out of the bullpen. He made 17 relief appearances, which is one short of the single-season record of 18 relief appearances. In his 17 appearances he pitched 26 and one-third innings striking out a team-high 44 batters.

Bednar, who recorded two saves on the season, also boosts a 2-1 record and teamed with Brent Lutz for the combined shutout of Penn State Behrend earlier this season.

Jones, Bednar and the rest of the Bobcats are currently waiting a possible ECAC tournament bid as well as a NCAA tournament bid. ECAC is scheduled to be announced on May 10, 2004 and the NCAA will be May 16, 2004.
