Frostburg State University is doing its part to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Current campus initiatives include:
FSU Community Who Wish Volunteer:
The American Red Cross is coordinating volunteer efforts for those who would like to go to the area impacted by Hurricane Katrina to assist with recovery efforts.
Individuals wishing to volunteer must undergo an eight-hour training session in Baltimore on a Wednesday from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. and commit three weeks of their time to the assigned site. Deployment will take place within 2-3 days after completion of the training program. Flight costs will be borne by the Red Cross. To register for training, individuals should call the local number: 301-722-1760, x107
PIN staff must check with the FSU Office of Human Resources and their immediate supervisors before taking any action. Contingency II staff can receive administrative leave to volunteer with the disaster relief, the University is willing to grant leave, with the permission of the supervisor. As in the case of “pinned” staff, requests should be forwarded to the Human Resources Office for approval.
The authorization to use administrative leave for disaster service is based on a Board of Regents’ policy applies only to exempt and non-exempt staff rather than to faculty members, whose instructional duties are concentrated primarily in the fall and spring semesters. The university encourages faculty members to contribute to the relief effort in other ways. For example, many of you have already volunteered to participate in the online Sloan Consortium initiative, and other opportunities to serve evacuees displaced to this region will be available through the activities of the University’s Center for Volunteerism and National Service.
Beyond making adjustments for individuals activated by the National Guard, there is no formal provision for students to be released from academic requirements to engage in disaster relief. Instead, the University recommends that students who wish to help become involved in the array of volunteer activities being planned by Cherie Krug and her staff through the Center for Volunteerism and National Service (x4210).
Please contact Office of Human Resources immediately (x4105) to learn more info or if you are interested in participating.
Volunteer with Re-Located Katrina Survivors:
Volunteers can help out at Camp Dawson in Kingwood, W.Va., where there are close to 300 Hurricane Katrina victims and their families. For certain volunteer opportunities, little or no is training required. If you cannot volunteer in the coming days, help will be needed for months to come.
