Kotofski Sets New Career Goals Mark in Win Over La Roche
10/07/2003

PITTSBURGH - Junior Karen Kotofski (Northeast/Glen Burnie, Md.) scored early in the second half to start a three-goal outburst that powered Frostburg State (6-4, 1-0) to a 4-2 win over host La Roche (8-4, 1-2) in FSU’s opening AMCC contest Tuesday afternoon.

The goal was Kotofski's 11th goal of the season and the 49th of her career, surpassing Amy Foote's former school mark of 48 set in 2001. Kotofski has played in 49 career games over two and a half season, averaging a goal a game and recording a total of 109 career points, which ranks second in school history behind Amy Foote’s career points record of 118.

The Bobcats jumped out early in the first half as junior Aimee Sprague (Yarmouth/Yarmouth, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season in the fifth minute of the game on a great solo-effort.

La Roche didn’t waste much time pulling even as they countered Sprague’s goal with five minutes left in the first half. Nichole Costantini scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon, as she was able to head the ball past senior goalkeeper Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) to send the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

In the previous two meetings between the Bobcats and the Redhawks, both games came right down to the final minutes as in the regular season the Bobcats fell 2-1 missing the tying goal by inches as a penalty kick was awarded to Kotofski with less than 23 minutes remaining, but the shot kicked off the post and was cleared easily by Redhawk defenders.

However, the Bobcats got their revenge in the AMCC tournament as they won a game for the ages. FSU captured its second straight AMCC championship with a thrilling shootout win over top-seeded La Roche. The teams battled to a 2-2 tie through two overtimes, but the Bobcats outscored the Redhawks, 3-1, in penalty kicks to post the upset and earn them a trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Knowing the importance of this game, FSU came out strong in the second half led by Kotofski’s record setting goal only eight minutes into the second half. Junior Erin Carraghan (Walkersville/Walkersville, Md.) scored her first goal of the season only two minutes with an assist from sophomore Beth Hlebasko (Linganore/New Market, Md.), her fifth of the season, as it proved to be the game winner.

Less than three minutes later freshman Danielle Carter (Rockville/Rockville, Md.) finished the scoring by putting in her sixth goal past Redhawk goalkeeper Ashley Chehovits with an assist from junior Becky Rambo (Hereford/Freeland, Md.), her first of the season.

The Bobcats will look to build upon the two-game winning streak, as they will battle Lake Erie College this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. FSU has not lost to Lake Erie since 2000 when they dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime, since then the Bobcats have outscored the Storm 19-0 in their last two matches.
