03/04/2006

ARLINGTON, VA — Senior Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) netted four goals to lead Frostburg State to a 11-10 victory over host Marymount in women’s lacrosse action Saturday morning.

The Bobcats opened the game with an early goal by junior Brittany Brumby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) just two minutes into action. Five minutes later, Aly Fulton put the Saints on the board.

Junior Ashley Mattison (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) gave FSU a 2-1 advantage at 23:41. Ritz scored at 22:59 off a feed from sophomore Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century) and senior Ann Long (New Market, Md./Linganore) found the net at the 16:56 mark after a pass from freshman Meredith Martin (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) to give Frostburg State a 4-1 lead.

Two more goals from MU tied the game at 4-4 with 12:29 left until halftime. Freshman Holly Reidt (Freeland, Md./Hereford (Essex CC)) regained the lead for the Bobcats with an assist from classmate Danielle Merson (Fallston, Md./Fallston).

The game was tied again at 8:19 when Marymount found the net but five minutes later, Merson scored off a feed from Long to give FSU a 6-5 lead at intermission.

The Bobcats opened the second half with three straight goals in the opening three minutes of action. During the run, Ritz found the net twice, while Merson scored once. At the 20:47 mark, the Saints found the net to cut their deficit to 9-6.

Ritz netted her fourth and final goal at 17:01 off a free position shot from eight meters out. Marymount scored three consecutive goals to come within 10-9 with 4:44 remaining.

With only 55 seconds left in regulation, Lamont gave FSU a two-goal cushion when she scored off a pass from Mattison. SpringAnne Hatfield netted a free position shot with four seconds left to play, but it was not enough for the Saints.

Freshman goalie Erin Morrell (Easton, Md./Easton) made 18 saves to pick up the win.

Frostburg State returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a game beginning at noon.
